Upper Blepharoplasty
Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery In New York
What is Upper Eyelid Surgery
An upper blepharoplasty can elevate your look from zero to a hundred. Your eyes are the most distinctive and most noticed features of your face. They can say a thousand words about who you are and how you feel. As you age, you may develop hooded upper eyelids that may affect your facial expressions, self-confidence, and in worse cases, your vision.
Upper blepharoplasty, also called upper eyelid lift or upper eyelid surgery, is a plastic surgery that addresses loose, sagging skin, muscle, and fat tissue in the upper eyelids.
Aging and genetics can result in loss of skin elasticity and weakened muscles around the eyes and eyelids. Under gravity, these excess skin, muscle, and fat tissue sag and accumulate, leading to a protrusion. This protrusion gives the hooded appearance of the upper eyelids and its results in a tired, upset, and more mature look.
Functionally, a drooping eyelid could impair vision, especially peripheral vision. When the skin of an eyelid sags, it covers your eyes more than it is supposed to. This affects how you see and what you can view, especially sidewards, upwards, and downwards.
With upper eyelid surgery, you can remove the excess skin and fat, redistribute fat tissue and stretch the muscles to get you looking young, alert, and lively.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for an Upper Blepharoplasty?
In the U.S., most upper blepharoplasty patients are middle-aged or older, ranging from the late 30s and early 40s and ranging into their 70s. However, younger individuals are also able to undergo the procedure, if they are interested.
Generally, an ideal candidate for an upper blepharoplasty is someone who:
- Has excess, sagging skin or folds in your upper eyelids
- Is overall healthy
- Does not have medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, uncontrolled hypertension, and clotting disorders that can interfere with your healing and recovery process
- Is a nonsmoker
- Does not have an eye condition, such as glaucoma or retinal detachment
- Has realistic expectations
The best person to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for a hooded eye surgery is your plastic surgeon. A consultation with Dr. Tal Dagan, the lead Dagan MD NYC upper eyelid surgeon, will provide the opportunity to discuss your health status, goals, expectations, and, if applicable, your surgical plan. How do I prepare for an Upper Blepharoplasty?
Preparation begins with your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will discuss the following with your medical history and aesthetic goals. You may be asked to undergo medical tests, a complete eye exam, and other visual tests.
At Dagan MD NYC, you will have another visit with us two weeks before your upper eyelid surgery. Your upper eyelid surgeon will review a complete list of pre-op and post-op instructions with you. You will be asked to undergo some routine laboratory tests and, if necessary, some eye tests.
How do I Recover After an Upper Blepharoplasty?
Following your procedure, it's normal to experience bruising and swelling lasting for 1 to 2 weeks. Cold compresses can be used to minimize bruising and swelling around the eyes. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup within this period as well. You will be able to resume work and social activities within one to two weeks. Complete recovery will take up to six weeks or more. It's important you avoid rigorous activities and exercises, smoking, drinking alcohol, and excessive sun exposure.
