Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery In New York

About Lower Eyelid Surgery

Our eyes may not only be windows into our souls. They may be the most distinctive facial features that make us unique from others. As we age, however, the skin and muscles of our eyelids begin to lose their elasticity resulting in sagging and drooping skin, fat, and muscle tissue. These changes can make you look older and tired and, in some cases, affect vision. The good news is you do not have to live with these any longer than you want to.

Dr. Tal Dagan adopts the best techniques to correct sagging and drooping eyelids and give you a rejuvenated, youthful, natural look. During your initial consultation, you meet our board-certified team of lower blepharoplasty surgeons who will work alongside you to ensure you achieve your aesthetic goals. Your desired results are envisioned with the help of Dr. Tal Dagan's acclaimed 3D printing visualization techniques.

If you are looking for a lower blepharoplasty surgeon in NYC, your best bet is Dagan MD NYC. We can provide you with a more youthful, smoother, and brighter appearance.

Variations of Blepharoplasty

One of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures, blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelid to tighten drooping skin, on the bottom eyelid to correct bags, or on both at the same time

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, removes fatty tissue and tightens aging skin around the eyes.  One of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures, blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelid to tighten drooping skin, on the bottom eyelid to correct bags, or on both at the same time.  Blepharoplasty will not reverse the appearance of wrinkles or crow’s feet.

How It’s Done

Eyelid surgery usually takes between one and three hours and is ordinarily performed under local anesthetic and oral or intravenous sedation, though some patients desire or require a general anesthetic.  Surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in your doctor’s office or surgical suite.

The surgeon begins by making incisions along the natural lines just bellow the lashes on the bottom eyelid and in the crease of the upper.  Excess fatty tissue, muscle, and skin (when necessary) are removed, and the incision is closed with sutures.

Defining Lower Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelids. Also known as an "eyelid lift," blepharoplasty is mostly an aesthetic plastic surgery used to eliminate excess skin and fat tissue from the eyelids and enhance your appearance. In some cases, it may be performed to correct vision problems medically.

Lower blepharoplasty is a type of blepharoplasty that targets the lower eyelid and under-eye area to reduce excess skin, eye bags, and puffiness.

An under-eye blepharoplasty, however, doesn't address wrinkles, fine lines, and dark circles around the eyes. Hence, if you want more advanced and improved results, your lower blepharoplasty may be paired with complementary procedures, including an upper blepharoplasty, a brow lift, a facelift, laser skin treatments, Botox injections, and other noninvasive cosmetic procedures.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for a Lower Blepharoplasty?

Age isn't necessarily a factor when considering an ideal candidate for lower eyelid surgery. However, most patients are often in their late 30s and early 40s to 70s, as individuals in this age bracket suffer from signs of aging (loose skin and puffiness in the lower eyelid) and desire a more youthful and vibrant look.

Generally, the best candidates for a lower blepharoplasty are individuals who:

  • Are overall healthy and do not have medical conditions that may interfere with recovery. Medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, uncontrolled hypertension, and blood clotting disorders can affect the healing process.
  • Do not have severe eye conditions such as glaucoma or retinal detachment that can be affected by an eyelid surgery.
  • Are generally nonsmokers.
  • Individuals who have realistic expectations for their results.

Experience the Benefits of Your Lower Blepharoplasty

Your face is one of the first things people usually notice about you. A lower blepharoplasty will allow you to feel more confident in how it presents and put your best foot forward when meeting new people. No more saggy lower eyelids. But that’s not the only benefit to this procedure.

There are several advantages to getting a lower blepharoplasty. Some of several may include:

  • Reducing signs of aging
  • Restoring the youthful shape and glow of your eyes
  • Eliminating excess skin, fat, and muscle that is causing bagginess in your lower eyelids
  • Addressing vision problems associated with sagging skin around the eyes
  • A fast recovery time

If you’re ready to get started, schedule a consultation with our office today.

The Recovery Process

After your procedure, it is normal to experience bruising, swelling, and excessive tearing. You may use cold compresses to relieve symptoms, and these should resolve within a week.

Your surgeon will prescribe an eye ointment for use postoperatively. This may cause temporary blurry vision, which would resolve once you stop using the ointment. Stitches and sutures are generally removed within a few days to a week.

  • You should be able to resume work and social activities within 10 to 14 days. However, complete recovery from lower eyelid surgery will usually take several weeks.
  • You are expected to see results within a few weeks after the swelling and bruising subsides. The results of a lower blepharoplasty should appear natural-looking and long-lasting.

How Do I Prepare for a Lower Blepharoplasty?

Preparation begins with your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will discuss the following with your medical history and aesthetic goals. You may be asked to undergo medical tests, a complete eye exam, and other visual tests.

At Dagan MD NYC, you will have another visit with us two weeks before your eyelid lift. Your lower blepharoplasty surgeon will review a complete list of pre-op and post-op instructions with you. These may include:

  • Considering which medications to avoid. Examples include blood thinners (warfarin), anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen), and herbal supplements. These medications can increase bleeding and bruising.
  • Quitting smoking. Smoking can impair your healing process, so your surgeon will ask you to quit smoking several weeks before your surgery.
  • Taking post-operative medications. Your surgeon might give you a prescription of drugs you'll need to take after the procedure.
  • Following post-operative instructions. These include activities that you can do (elevating your head while sleeping, and wearing dark sunglasses outdoors) and those you should avoid after your surgery (driving, reading, watching TV, and vigorous exercise for a few weeks).
